What is a hryphon?

The word

From the gryphon — the mythic hybrid, eagle above and lion below, two natures in one body that worked better than either alone. Swap the eagle for human judgment and the lion for machine endurance, and you have the same bargain, four thousand years later. The H is for hybrid.

The gryphon was never a monster. It was an argument about combination — that the eagle’s sight and the lion’s strength were worth more welded together than apart, and that the welding produced something with its own nature rather than a pantomime horse. Four thousand years later the same argument is being made about judgment and endurance.

Why not just say “robot”?

A robot executes instructions. A hryphon carries a model. The difference is that a robot needs to be told what happens next, and a hryphon has already been told what usually happens next — ten million times, by data.

The distinction is not pedantry, it is the whole commercial case. A robot is a capital expense that does exactly what it was told. A hryphon is a capital expense that does what the data told it, which means it keeps improving after the purchase order clears — and it means that the asset you are actually buying is the model, not the chassis.

The anatomy

1. The instrumented layer

Every signal a skilled human was reading with their eyes, ears and nineteen years of pattern recognition, converted into something with a timestamp. This is the unglamorous part, it takes the longest, and skipping it is the single most common reason autonomy programmes fail.

2. The model

Trained on that instrumented history. The target is not to beat the best operator on their best day — it is to beat the median operator across every day, including the ones after a bad night. That is a much lower bar and a much larger prize.

3. The endurance layer

The chassis. Whatever physically carries the model into the world and keeps carrying it at 3am, in the rain, in the fourth consecutive hour. This is the part people photograph and the least interesting part of the system.

4. The loop

What closes prediction into action without a human in the middle. Everything before this is a very expensive dashboard.

What a hryphon is not

• Not a replacement for judgment. It carries judgment that has already been made and learned from. Novel situations still go to a person.
• Not artificial general intelligence. Nothing here requires it. The economics work with narrow prediction on well-instrumented processes, which exists today.
• Not necessarily humanoid. The artwork shows bipeds because the story is about a soldier. Most real hryphons will look like a pump, a gate, a camera mast or a line of code.
• Not a defence-only idea. The endurance argument is simply clearest in a military frame. The accounting is identical in a warehouse.
